Background and Treatment
Pneumonia is an acute infection of the respiratory tract with high incidence and, in hospitalized patients, is usually caused by bacteria. 5% of hospitalized patients develop this rapidly advancing condition with mortality rates of up to over 30% and an average hospital stay of 11 to 14 days.
Current standard diagnostics use microbiological cultures to detect bacteria and their antibiotic resistances. However, this method means that the results are only available after one to five days. Due to the lack of diagnostic results, most cases of pneumonia are treated empirically. This results in a high rate (~40%) of initially inadequate antibiotic treatments. Studies have shown that early targeted antibiotic treatment can significantly reduce both the mortality rate and the length of the hospital stay.
The Unyvero Pneumonia Application was developed to improve diagnosis of pathogens and the resistance of these pathogens in acute bacterial pneumonia. This application
